New Bedford EMS Academy to Graduate Next Generation of First responders

Thirteen weeks of emergency medical training are coming to an end for Class 25-02 of the New Bedford EMS Training Academy. The program which began in May is preparing to graduate a new class of students who will be ready to take their National Registry Exam enter the world of emergency medicine.

Held at the City’s Southend Public Safety Building, Instructed by Paramedic Jacob Hughes and Paramedic Michael Florio students gained firsthand experiences in the classroom and covered a wide range of essential EMS topics including cardiac, trauma and medical emergencies, pediatric emergencies as well as operational readiness. Classroom learning also includes hands on skills that are part of the EMT’s everyday job.

Last week, students participated in “scenario day,” a hands-on training exercise which simulates real-life emergency situations. The day allows students to practice patient assessments and interventions in a controlled but realistic environment.

“This program is more than just lectures—it’s about preparing students for the real world of EMS’ said lead instructor Jacob Hughes. “Nothing compares to putting your hands on the equipment and talking to real people. That is where the learning really happens.”

With just one week remaining in the program, students are now preparing for their final exams. Graduation will mark the beginning of their journey into an impactful and rewarding career in emergency services.

“My EMT class has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences I’ve had —One of my favorite parts is how collaborative the class feels” said student Alaina Lague.
