New Bedford EMS Successfully Delivers Baby Boy in Ambulance

New Bedford EMS is proud to announce that the crew of Medic 1, Paramedic F. Vieira and EMT B. Rowe successfully delivered a baby boy prior to arrival at the Hospital!

On November 22nd at approximately 2:40am Medic 1 was dispatched to reports of a female in labor. First arriving New Bedford Police officers informed the crew that the patient was having contractions approximately 7 minutes apart. Upon Medic 1’s arrival they found the patient in active labor, with delivery appearing imminent. Due to their extensive training and quick thinking a few minutes later our crew was able to assist mom is delivering a healthy baby boy. Mom and Baby were transported by Medic 1 to St Luke’s Hospital Labor and Delivery Department.

The crew of Medic 1 acted with professionalism, precision and remained calm throughout what was a challenging situation. A big thanks to the New Bedford Police Officers who were on scene and helped assist the providers on Medic 1. “I am once again proud that our providers were able to execute such a delicate and stressful procedure that is infrequent in the world of EMS” Stated EMS Director Thomas.

Our providers train extensively on multiple different medical and trauma scenarios; pre-hospital childbirth is one of those scenarios and educational topics that is covered. While field childbirth is not a common occurrence our providers have the knowledge, tools and expertise to flawlessly execute such a delicate and rewarding procedure.
