The New Bedford EMS Training Division recently conducted CPR, AED, and First Aid certification courses for members of the City of New Bedford Department of Public Infrastructure (DPI). In addition, the Training Division traveled to the New Bedford Office of Emergency Management (OEM) headquarters to provide lifesaving training to Emergency Management Agency (EMA) volunteers.
These collaborative training efforts reflect New Bedford EMS’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality education and preparedness initiatives to City employees and the community. By expanding access to CPR and First Aid training across City departments, New Bedford EMS helps strengthen the chain of survival and improve emergency response readiness throughout the city.

Early recognition of cardiac arrest, prompt activation of emergency services, and the immediate initiation of high-quality CPR are proven to significantly increase survival rates. Participants received hands-on instruction in CPR and AED use, as well as basic First Aid skills, including bleeding control through direct pressure and tourniquet application.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 436,000 Americans experience cardiac arrest each year, with the majority occurring outside of hospital settings. Despite this, only approximately 40 percent of victims receive CPR before emergency medical services arrive. Training City employees and volunteers equips them with the knowledge and confidence to take immediate action in a medical emergency.
New Bedford EMS remains dedicated to expanding lifesaving education opportunities and fostering partnerships across City departments to enhance public safety. While we hope these skills are never needed, having trained individuals ready to respond can make a critical difference when seconds matter most.
